It was the late eighties and although I didn’t know it at the time, I was at a musical cross-roads. I am the oldest of four kids, so had no older brother to shape my musical tastes. My parents mainly listened to classical music (although I had played my mum’s cassette of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club band to death). I had been exposed to some great music at school: singing various Beatles numbers in assemblies, and having a kiwi teacher who had done some busking in his time and taught us a decent rock and blues repertoire (along with the haka and a killer card trick), but I hadn’t yet defined who I was going to be.
